Police have reopened downtown Wilmington streets after a suspicious packaged turned out to be an empty book bag.

City police issued a text alert just after 9:20 a.m. Monday that Orange Street, between Ninth and 10th streets, was closed after a suspicious package was found. Eastbound traffic on Tenth Street was also diverted.

The scene was cleared about 11:30 a.m. after the package – an empty book bag – was deemed "harmless," Wilmington police Sgt. Scott Chaffin said.

Wilmington Police have a portion of Orange Street closed as they investigate a suspicious package.
