Part of Newark's East Main Street was closed due to a gas leak, police said.

A construction crew working on Main Street struck a gas line around 2:30 p.m., Master Cpl. William Smith of Newark police said.

Newark police and Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder closed the road off between Library Avenue and Chapel Street.

Delmarva Power was on scene working to contain the gas leak, Smith said.

Police advised drivers to expect delays and use caution in the area.

This is a developing story.
