Gray skies took over the Delaware beaches, with traffic moving toward clearer skies to the north as lightning struck on Monday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the southeastern portion of Delaware, including Georgetown, Millsboro and Lewes, until 3:45 p.m. The National Weather Service warns of wind up to 60 mph with possible quarter-sized hail.

High wind and hail are possible with today's storm, the weather service warns.

Delmarva Power was reporting only a handful of power outages in southern Delaware on Monday afternoon.

In Rehoboth Beach, beachgoers were forced off the sand for safety twice as storms rolled in, said Rehoboth Beach Patrol Captain Kent Buckson.

"It was a very dangerous system," he said, noting that everybody moved off the beach quickly as the skies darkened.

A storm rolls in over Rehoboth Beach Aug. 19.

A chance of storms continues in southern Delaware through Thursday evening. Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 90s, with humidity making it feel much hotter.

On Monday, the humidity made it feel about 102 degrees in Georgetown, with only a slight breeze.

DelDOT's traffic cameras capture the storm in Sussex County on Aug. 19. Here Route 1 can be seen along Delaware Seashore State Park between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach.
