Several residents of the Forwood Manor Independent Living facility were hospitalized after a fire at the facility Wednesday night, according to the State Fire Marshal office.

The fire started in the facility's kitchen when "cooking oil erupted in the flames while heating on the stove top," Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio said in a press release. The Claymont Fire Company, with support from other departments, responded to the fire around 5 p.m. The facility is located at 1912 Marsh Rd.

The fire was contained using a portable fire extinguisher, the release said.

An 84-year-old man who suffered burns, was taken to the Christiana Hospital and is in "stable condition," according to the release. Several other residents were transported to area hospitals for medical evaluation.

State fire investigators said the fire caused $5,000 of damage.
