A winter storm heading for the northeast is expected to dump up to 5 inches of snow on New Castle County on Wednesday and 4 inches in lower Delaware.
The 24-hour storm will include rain, snow and sleet from early Wednesday, National Weather Service meteorologists predict.
"All of Delaware is going to see more snow than in the past few storms," meteorologist Jonathan O'Brien said.
The snowfall is expected to start early Wednesday and continue until about 2 p.m. Wednesday. The precipitation will then shift to rain and sleet until the end of Wednesday, O'Brien said.
The snow will most likely start out powdery, but as it starts to mix in freezing rain and sleet, the snowflakes become wet, making for good snowballs or snowmen, O'Brien said.
Delaware is on a winter storm watch for Wednesday, and meteorologists caution drivers to stay alert or work from home if possible.
For Thursday the weather is expected to jump back up to the mid-50s, and Friday should be in the mid-40s.
"As the storm pulls away, there is going to be some warming up behind it," O'Brien said.
