Brace yourself, Aldan drivers. It’s your turn to deal with some road improvements.

Aqua Pennsylvania is planning to close Providence Road between Oak Avenue and Springfield Road in the borough beginning Thursday, Jan. 3, for water main installation, according to PennDOT. Weather permitting, the closure will be in place weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of March.

During the closure, Providence Road motorists will be detoured over Oak Avenue, MacDade Boulevard, and Springfield Road. Local access will be maintained up to the work zone.

Aqua Pennsylvania will complete this project under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit.

Conchester work

The massive project to improve Route 322 – the Conchester Highway – rolls on, with Stage 1 nearing completion. Unfortunately for drivers who use it, there is no end to the delays on the heavily traveled road.

Periodic daytime lane closures and stoppages will occur this week on the Conchester in Concord Township as crews set up a new traffic pattern that marks the substantial completion of Stage 1 construction on the $62.2 million project to widen and improve 2.6 miles of the highway.

Flagger-controlled lane closures and brief stoppages will be in place on Wednesday, Dec. 19, through Friday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., between U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) and Fellowship Drive. The restrictions will allow crews to move temporary construction barriers and complete other tasks as they shift a lane of eastbound and westbound traffic onto the recently widened eastbound side of the highway in that area.

Work crews in early 2019 will begin Stage 2 work that will widen and improve the westbound side of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in the area of the new traffic pattern.

Stage 1 construction will continue until next spring on the eastbound side of U.S. 322 between Fellowship Drive and Clayton Park Drive.

Motorists should expect delays on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) and allow extra time for travel through the work areas or use an alternate route. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT began construction in spring 2017 on the first-of-two mainline projects to widen and reconstruct a 6.7-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Route 452 (Market Street) in Concord, Bethel and Upper Chichester townships, Delaware County. Work on the first mainline section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

Engineering design is advancing for the widening and reconstruction of the eastern section (Section 102) of the highway from just east of Clayton Park Drive to just east of Route 452 (Market Street). Construction on this section is expected to start in 2020.

An additional contract to replace the U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) bridge over the CSX railroad and Bethel Road as well as improvements to the adjacent Bethel Road Interchange is under design.

Upper Darby

PECO is planning weekday lane restrictions on U.S. 1 (Township Line Road) between Agnew Drive and Wilson Drive in Upper Darby Township, on Monday, Dec. 17, through Friday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for gas main installation.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PECO will complete this project under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit.

Route 202

Southbound U.S. 202 will be reduced to a single lane through the U.S. 30 Interchange in East Whiteland and West Whiteland townships, Chester County, from 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, to 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, for barrier realignment and line painting that will complete the new southbound traffic pattern that is scheduled to be in place by Saturday, Dec. 15 for bridge construction.

By 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, it was expected that PennDOT would have shifted a single lane of southbound U.S. 202 traffic onto the rebuilt inner half of the southbound bridge over Amtrak. The traffic shift will remove vehicles from the outer half of the southbound bridge, allowing rehabilitation to begin on that half of the structure.

A second southbound lane will continue in the “express lane” traffic pattern that has been in place on the rehabilitated northbound bridge since the start of southbound construction last July. Two northbound lanes will remain on the northbound side through the work zone for the remainder of the project.

Motorists are advised that backups may occur at times approaching the work zone. All schedule activities are weather permitting.

The bridge repairs are part of PennDOT’s $26.4 million project that also included replacement of the concrete pavement on the ramps to and from U.S. 202 and U.S. 30/Exton Bypass. The entire project is expected to be completed in mid-2019.
