Axes and Ales moves up its opening date, sans the ale

Earlier this week, Beau Warren said he was hoping to open his ax-throwing club, Axes and Ales, within a month.

On Friday, he confirmed that Axes and Ales will open Wednesday, March 27, at 349 East Ave. (in the old Pearl nightclub).

Axes and Ales has not gotten its liquor license yet, so for the time being, it won’t be able to serve ales or wine. “I know, bummer,” the club’s website reads. And state law prohibits people from bringing alcohol into the club. (However, there are multiple bars nearby.)

Axes and Ales’ kitchen is still under construction, so for now, guests should feel free to bring their own food.

People will be able to walk in without an online reservation and use an ax-throwing lane on a first-come, first-served basis, for $20 an hour. A coach, certified by the World Axe Throwing League (WATL), “will give a short tutorial and show you how to compete,” the website explains. “The coach will always be around to moderate and assist but will not be dedicated to your lane.”

Ax-throwing club Axes and Ales opens Wednesday, March 27, at 349 East Ave.

Online reservations will be accepted for groups of up to 16 people, but groups of fewer than 14 will be paired with other groups. The group rate is $35 per person for 2½ hours and includes a dedicated WATL-certified coach.

“We know axe-throwing sounds and looks a little crazy,” the website reads, “but anyone can learn how to throw and axe and make it stick. Safety is our number one priority and great care is taken to make it no only safe but fun for everybody involved.”

Another ax-throwing club, Bad Axe Throwing, previously announced it will open April 12 at 123 Liberty Pole Way. (Bad Axe is part of a chain of more than 20 ax-throwing clubs based in Ontario, Canada; Axes and Ales is not part of chain.) The Riot Room, a bar with a rage room and carnival-game space opens April 1 at 350 East Ave., directly across the street from Axes and Ales.
