The Aurora City Council is responsible for choosing a replacement for Mayor Steve Hogan after his recent death following a battle with cancer.

The city’s charter gives the council until June 27 to make a selection on who will serve out the rest of Hogan’s four-year term, which ends in December 2019.

Aurora residents can apply for the job until 5 p.m. on May 29. They must be at least 21 years old, have no felony convictions, have lived in Aurora for at least a year and be U.S. citizens to be eligible for the post.

Hogan was 69 when he died on May 13 during his second term as Aurora’s mayor. He was a fixture in Colorado politics for years, serving as a state lawmaker and for 24 years on the Aurora City Council before becoming mayor, championing infrastructure issues and development along the way.

Hogan announced in March that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Earlier this month he entered home hospice care.

Hogan’s life was celebrated at a memorial last weekend.
