Denver is slightly ahead of some its suburban neighbors as the most expensive city in the metro area to rent an apartment.

A new report by rental company Zumper identified the most and least expensive cities to rent in the metro area by analyzing active listings that hit the market in May. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Colorado was $1,268.

Denver’s median rent of $1,540 was just ahead of Broomfield’s and Centennial’s at $1,510. Littleton was third most expensive at $1,450.

Aurora was the most affordable city at $1,190. Northglenn was second most affordable at $1,210 and Arvada followed at $1,280.

The cities that had the fastest growing rents were Arvada, Northglenn and Thornton. Despite being some of the most affordable cities, Arvada and Northglenn’s rents had both increased by 11% since last year. Westminster and Lakewood’s rents both decreased from last year, with Lakewood’s decreasing by as much as 10%. Castle Rock was the only city where rent stayed flat.
