Denverites will likely get some reprieve from the high temperatures on Sunday with some thunderstorms and rain showers expected, according to a National Weather Service forecast.

The last day of the weekend calls for mostly sunny skies during the day with a 40 percent chance of rain with a high of 81 degrees and a low of 53 degrees. High wind gusts up to 16 mph are possible at night, with an increased chance of rain.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to be more severe in the mountains and plains, with some heavy rain and hail possible, the weather service said on Twitter.

Warmer temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week with showers and thunderstorms likely. High temperatures will range in the high 70s and low 80s, forecasters predict.

Despite the possible heavy rains and wind in the mountains and plains, the possibility of flooding is low, weather service’s hazardous weather outlook for northeast and north central Colorado stated. The plains could see hail up to one inch in diameter and wind gusts to 60 mph on Sunday, most likely from 4-8 p.m. in areas north of Interstate 70 and east of Interstate 25, it said.

Monday and Tuesday are expected to be “cool, moist and unsettled,” with more chance of rain showers and thunderstorms, forecasters predicted.

“Storms may approach severe limits on Monday afternoon across the plains with hail and damaging winds,” the weather outlook stated.

The rest of the work week will likely be more dry and warm, with another round of cooler temperatures and rainfall next weekend, according to the weather service.
