Denver surpassed a 33-year-old heat record Monday when the thermometer reached 98 degrees at 2:17 p.m., National Weather Service forecasters confirmed.
The old record of 97 degrees was set in 1986, the NWS said. Denver’s official temperatures are recorded at Denver International Airport.

In Lamar, in southeast Colorado, the high temperature is expected to reach 102 degrees.
With temperatures rising to the 70s and 80s in the mountains, there is a high fire danger warning, the NWS said.
There’s a small chance for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon when it should be mostly sunny. The high temperature is expected to be about 95 degrees.
The chance for rain and thunderstorms increases in the evening with a 40 percent chance for precipitation Tuesday night.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday afternoon. The high temperature is expected to be about 86 degrees.
There is a 30 percent chance for rain on Thursday, when the high temperature will be around 90 degrees, the NWS said.
The chance for rain diminishes on Friday when it should be mostly sunny with a high temperature of about 88 degrees, forecasters said.
Denver is predicted to warm up again on the weekend when temperatures should rise to about 94 degrees on Saturday and 95 on Sunday, the NWS said.
