A 16-year-old boy, accompanied by his mother, turned himself in around midnight Wednesday in connection to a shooting outside Sheridan High School, a Sheridan police spokesman said. The suspect is a student of SOAR Academy, Sheridan School District’s alternative school, according to an email from Superintendent Pat Sandos.

The suspect was at-large since the shooting in the high school parking lot Tuesday night, Commander Bruce Williamson said. Another juvenile, a Denver Public Schools student, is recovering at a local hospital from a gunshot wound.

Police said a group of people were involved in a fight outside the high school, and the victim and suspect, who knew each other, began arguing. The suspect then fired at least one round at the victim, police said. A volleyball game was taking place at the time, and the school was placed on lockdown.

All Sheridan School District schools were closed Wednesday as a safety measure. The police department planned to provide additional officers at all district schools on Thursday and Friday. The school district has also made mental health experts available to work with students.

The incident appears to be isolated, Sandos said in the statement.
