The coronavirus pandemic recently completed its fifth month, but plenty of mysteries still exist about it. And a new report has revealed what each state wants to know about the coronavirus.

Method:

SYKES recently reviewed Google Search data to discover different queries in each state about the coronavirus. The research team looked at the CDC’s COVID-19 FAQs page and cross-referenced those with more than 25 questions and phrases from Google trends.

  • Answers spanned from rules about social distancing, information about treatment and common misconceptions about the virus.

What Utah wants to know

Utah’s top related query was: “Coronavirus symptoms in kids.”

  • Utah joined Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana and Wyoming in looking for information on coronavirus symptoms for children.
  • Massachusetts and New York searched for how to find information about face masks for children more than any other state.

Bigger picture:

  • Researchers have started to use data from Google to predict COVID-19 hotspots, as I wrote about for Deseret.com. Researchers at Harvard recently created a new algorithm that uses Gogle searches and new location data to determine where there may an increase in COVID-19 symptoms within a 14-day time frame.
