SALT LAKE CITY — A man was shot and killed by officers in Salt Lake City overnight Saturday after a confrontation, police said.

About 2 a.m., police were dispatched to 900 S. 300 West on a report of a group being threatened by two people with a gun, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks.

When officers arrived at the area, Horrocks said a suspect in the incident ran away from them.

Police chased the man and found him nearby. A confrontation occurred, and an officer fired his gun, according to Horrocks.

Details about the confrontation were not released. Horrocks said he did not know how many officers were involved.

The man, described only as Hispanic, died on scene. His name was not immediately released.

Horrocks said he did not know if the man had a weapon.

“It’s still early on in the investigation. (Unified police) will be handling that. Those are likely details that will be coming out eventually,” Horrocks said.

No officers were injured during the confrontation.

Police believe there may be a second suspect whom they haven’t found, but they don’t believe the person poses an immediate threat to the public.

Lt. David Wierman declined to provide additional information Saturday.

Unified police will investigate the shooting.
