SALT LAKE CITY —For the fourth day in a row, Utah reported a large rise in new COVID-19 cases, with 264 more confirmed.

The cases bring the state’s total since the pandemic began to 9,797. Just over 3,800 tests were performed since Saturday’s report, bringing the total to 213,914.

The positive rate has risen from between 4.2-4.3%, where it had lingered for the past few weeks, up to 4.6%.

Another resident also died with the disease, bringing the state’s toll to 113. The death was a Wasatch County man younger than 65, according to the Utah Department of Health.

The largest rises within the past three days have occurred in Salt Lake County, where 248 more cases were confirmed; Utah County, where 102 more were confirmed; the Bear River Health District, with 62 more cases; and Southwest Utah, with 54. The rest of Utah’s health districts have each seen less than 20 new cases since Friday.

San Juan County now has the highest rate of COVID-19 cases per capita, with 3,791 testing positive for the virus out of 100,000. By comparison, Park City, another hard-hit area since the pandemic began, has an infection rate of 1,194 per 100,000.

Twelve more people required hospitalization for the disease, but overall current hospitalizations have remained consistent. There are now 98 people hospitalized in Utah with COVID-19.

In Utah, 6,137 people are considered recovered from the novel coronavirus after passing the three-week point since their diagnoses.
