Salt Lake City listed on New York Times graph of ‘where the virus is sending people to hospitals’

The New York Times has released a new, detailed “look at where people are falling seriously ill” from the novel coronavirus, and Salt Lake City appears in the data.

The data tool allows people to filter the information based on patients in hospital, patients in the ICU, cases in the last week and deaths in the last week.

“There’s this pandemic fatigue,” Thomas Tsai, an assistant professor of health policy at Harvard University, told The New York Times. “All eyes were on New York. Houston is New York now. Miami is New York now. Phoenix is New York now. We need that shared collective urgency.”

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said Wednesday that local evidence showed a mask mandate has helped the state begin to reverse the trend of COVID-19 cases, per the Deseret News.

“I do think a requirement makes a difference,” the mayor said. “The data shows the stabilization and even a decline for Salt Lake County right now. For those reasons, and as a parent, I would encourage (Gov. Gary Herbert) to expedite his timeline to enact a statewide requirement now.”
