Riverside County officials on Thursday were unable to give their daily update of coronavirus cases due to technical difficulties with a state database.

Riverside County public information officer Brooke Federico said that the county usually pulls information it needs to compile its daily reports of new cases, deaths and testing data from CalREDIE, a system overseen by the California Department of Public Health whose name stands for California Reportable Disease Information Exchange.

But that system wasn't working properly Thursday and Federico couldn't say when the figures might the available.

"It does help us understand the prevalence of disease in our community, and helps us track trends," Federico said. "We know we want to get the most accurate information on a daily basis, and we want to share it with the public as well."

On Wednesday, the county reported 8,303 coronavirus cases and 345 deaths. A total of 4,897 people had recovered.

The new confirmed case figures mean the county is reporting 336 cases for every 100,000 residents.

Riverside County has the second-highest confirmed cases of any county in the state behind Los Angeles County which had more than 59,450 cases as of Thursday, and ahead of San Diego County which had about 7,800 as of Wednesday.

The county says it has 228 number of cases in jails, where 207 inmates have recovered.

At state prisons located in the county, there were at least 173 cases.

Riverside County in recent weeks has ramped up calls for residents to get tested —whether or not they show symptoms — to get a better handle on how far the virus has spread.

As of Wednesday, Riverside county has tested 125,268 residents, which translates to a testing rate of about 5,069 tests per 100,000 residents. That compares to the neighboring San Bernardino's testing rate of about 3,123 tests for every 100,000 residents.
