St. Kilda has three new and unique restaurants in the works right now in Des Moines

Ever since St. Kilda Cafe and Bakery opened in downtown Des Moines in May 2017, it's been bringing avocado toast and cortado coffee drinks to diners looking for something different and healthy.

And the restaurant has been flourishing.

Named for the sunny Australian resort town where the owner, Alexander Hall, was born, St. Kilda, at 300 SW 5th Street, is on the ground floor of Harbach Lofts, a former furniture warehouse just off Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway that has been renovated into apartments.

But three new restaurants are currently in the works for the St. Kilda team, which includes Hall's wife, Whitney, a Des Moines native. One of them will require adjusting the hours for the original location. Here's a peek.

St. Kilda Surf & Turf

111 E. Grand Ave., Des Moines

St. Kilda Surf & Turf will open first on May 8. Located in a sparkling new four-story mixed-use building north of the new City Hall parking garage, the restaurant will focus on fish dishes and fresh and healthy foods.

Look for grilled fish and chips to make an appearance on the menu, a divergence from the usual battered and deep-fried classic. The menu will offer healthy salads with meat or seafood add-ons; sandwiches that include Greek souvlaki with grilled chicken, lamb, pork, beef or falafel; fish and vegetarian tacos; and side dishes.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at this location, including Counter Culture Coffee. The restaurant will feature a full bar with beer and cocktails, maintaining a focus on organic and vegan Australian wines from Yalumba. Brunch will be offered on weekends. Hours: 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

St. Kilda at Temple For Performing Arts

1013 Locust St., Des Moines

Set to open in late May, St. Kilda has expanded into the ground floor at The Temple For Performing Arts at 1013 Locust Street.

Keeping true to its original location, St. Kilda at The Temple will continue to offer its healthy modern dishes for breakfast and lunch. And that menu includes plenty of fresh-baked pastries and bread, artisanal coffee beverages, smoothies, and a full bar serving cocktails, beer and wine.

St. Kilda in Valley Junction

335 5th St., West Des Moines

St. Kilda's next location at 335 5th Street is set to open in the spring of 2020.

The West Des Moines city council recently approved the renovation and development of St. Kilda's next location at 335 5th Street to open in the spring of 2020.

The 7,200-square-foot restaurant will feature a bar, bakery and event space. Fans of St. Kilda can look forward to breakfast, lunch and a more robust and advanced dinner menu.

As it prepares its Valley Junction location, the original St. Kilda will have new hours as of April 29, serving only its daytime menu. Hours: 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
