Stew's Smoke Shack BBQ continues to be closed after owner's sudden passing

A popular barbecue restaurant in the Drake neighborhood continues to be closed after the sudden passing of its owner on June 10.

Stew's Smoke Shack BBQ and Catering, located at 2511 Cottage Grove Ave., near Drake University, announced on its Facebook page that it will continue to be closed for the time being.

Restaurant owner Steve Stewart, 47, passed away suddenly in the afternoon of Monday, June 10. Stewart's family closed the restaurant at that time, announcing the closure on June 11. Stew's Smoke Shack continued to honor catering orders during that time.

Good Morning, all!" Stew's posted on Facebook on June 24. "The Shack is still closed for the time being. The GrubHub, MyTownToGo and other food delivery services should also be suspended. When the family is ready to make an announcement about the future of The Shack, we will let you now [sic]. Thank you for your understanding at this difficult time."

Stephen "Stew" Stewart bought Woody's Smoke Shack Championship BBQ & Catering in February 2018 after graduating from the culinary program at Des Moines Area Community College two years earlier. The Des Moines Roosevelt alumnus kept most things the same from the original restaurant.
