Here's where you can cool off with boozy ice cream cocktails in the Des Moines metro

Frozen drinks are hard to beat during the hot weather. And there are plenty of places in Des Moines serving an arsenal of refreshing margaritas, daiquiris and piña coladas. 

But what about ice cream drinks? Ice cream can be blended to create all sorts of boozy shakes in a wide variety of creamy flavors and combinations that will help cool you off in the summer heat.

Here are places in the Des Moines metro where you can enjoy a wide variety of milkshakes spiked with your favorite flavor-enhancing liquor:

Central Standard Craft Beer & Burgers

The list of gratuitously-garnished shakes has a prominent spot on the menu at this burger and beer joint in Waukee. Enjoy classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ($5) or go for something more fun like birthday cake, chocolate brownie overload, cookie dough or s'mores ($8.50). The Sweet N Salty combines caramel ice cream, pretzels, salted caramel, peanut butter cups and M&Ms ($8.50). One shake, called Will's Feature Shake of the Month, donates a portion of its proceeds to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital ($9). All shakes can be spiked with the addition of Rumchata, Kahlua, Godiva liqueur and more ($3 extra).

The Creamery Bar at Smash Park

The Napoleon Dynamite Shake from The Creamery Bar inside Smash Park - Named by Kayleigh Wilson, this shake is made with vanilla ice cream, vodka, strawberry syrup and creme de cacao, topped with chocolate ice cream and a strawberry.

This new ice cream bar at Smash Park is all about options. At least a dozen varieties of  Homer's ice cream shakes and floats greet those looking for a little kick with their frozen treats. Try a Cinnamon Toast Crunch shake made with cinnamon and vanilla ice creams, caramel vodka and Rumchata, topped with whipped cream and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal ($9). Or go for an If You Like Pina Coladas made with vanilla ice cream, Malibu rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice, topped with whipped cream, pineapple and toasted coconut ($9). You can even float away with a Welcome to Goodburger float made with vanilla ice cream, Stoli Vanil vodka and Orange Crush soda ($7).

Zombie Burger + Drink Lab

A Human Centipeach shake (vanilla ice cream, peach purée, white cake batter and graham cracker crumbs) and a coconut cream pie shake at Zombie Burger + Drink Lab in Des Moines.

Survive a zombie plague at this apocalypse-themed restaurant in East Village serving over a dozen varieties of shakes and ice cream floats. Try a Zombie Bride Wedding Cake with vanilla ice cream and yellow cake mix or a Human Centipeach — vanilla ice cream, peach puree, white cake batter and graham cracker crumbs. Each milkshake can be spiked ($8.25 each). Cola or root beer floats are made with vanilla ice cream and can also be spiked with shot of liquor ($8.25).
