The new Popeyes fried chicken sandwich that has become a cultural phenomenon will not be available in any of the three Des Moines-area restaurants until October.

That's right — the Popeyes near Merle Hay Mall, the Popeyes near Southridge Mall and the Popeyes in Altoona won't be stocked with the chicken sandwich until the leaves begin to change.

The new menu item that has launched a multitude of inter-brand Twitter wars over who offers the best chicken sandwich, launched to the top of critics' rankings and even prompted the New Yorker to proclaim that it will "save America" will not be available to Des Moinesian taste buds for a couple of months.

Popeyes' new chicken sandwich was originally released Aug. 12 and quickly sold out.

The sandwich is comprised of fried chicken on a toasted brioche bun accompanied by pickles with either a spicy Cajun spread or classic mayo.

Both Des Moines restaurants answered the phone call inquiring after the chicken sandwich with an exasperated "no." The Altoona location confirmed the October availability.

Des Moines fried chicken enthusiasts will be able to see what all the buzz is about for themselves ... eventually.
