Petals + Moss is the East Village's newest plant and gift shop in Des Moines
Linh TaA new plant and gift shop in Des Moines' East Village aims to bring curated global goods to the Midwest and make it as Instagram-able as possible.
Petals + Moss, at 333 East Grand Ave., is opening in the retail space below East Village Square Apartments across from Zombie Burger. The store is hosting a grand opening from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday with snacks and refreshments available.
The owner, Saley Nong, has operated floral shops in the metro and works in event planning and floral arrangements. Nong curated items from across the globe to fill every nook and cranny in the shop, including jewelry, pottery, vintage items and trinkets, said Madeline Smithey, visual designer of the store.
The store is also packed with greenery for sale, including ferns, orchids, fig trees and air plants, Smithey said.
“It totally embodies the East Village vibe,” Smithey said. “It will be completely different stuff all the time. There’s something for everyone.”
With the East Village growing, including the new mixed-use development at 111 East Grand Ave., Smithey said the popular downtown space was an ideal place to open a shop. The list of retailers in the East Grand Avenue area is growing, including the newly opened Dreiberge Coffee and Lululemon at 219 East Grand Avenue.
"We’re so excited to be in Des Moines and for people to shop local," Smithey said. "We’re excited for them to see things they wouldn’t normally see because we have a curated collection from all over."
