Parts of a northwest Iowa city were evacuated Monday morning after a large ammonia leak, authorities said.

Aurelia evacuated residents and businesses in areas east of Main Street and north of Highway 7, city police said. The area expanded as wind direction changed.

The Aurelia Police Department lifted the evacuation order at 5:30 p.m. Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities say a valve broke Monday morning on a 30,000-gallon tank at the First Cooperative Association elevator, releasing the fumes, AP reported.

No injuries have been reported in the town of about 1,000 people in Cherokee County.
