An Iowa sheriff's deputy was conducting a traffic stop early Saturday when a semitrailer truck slammed into his patrol sport utility vehicle, injuring him, the Iowa State Patrol said.

Pottawattamie County Deputy Adam Fields, 31, had pulled over about 4 a.m. near the Nebraska border along northbound Interstate Highway 29, troopers said. His emergency lights were on.

A truck driven by Austin Oliver, 26, of Bronson hit the SUV when Oliver fell asleep, according to the State Patrol. The truck then went into the median and across the southbound lanes, finally jackknifing in the ditch.

Fields was injured and taken to a Council Bluffs hospital. His condition was not specified in an accident report.
