Pottawattamie County Sheriff's vehicle totaled by semi driver.

A semi-truck slammed into a Pottawattamie County Sheriff's car before hitting a deputy Saturday morning in eastern Iowa, officials said.

Deputy Adam Fields was standing outside the window of a car he had pulled over while conducting a traffic stop at about 4 a.m. on Interstate 29, just south of Council Bluffs, when a FedEx truck struck him, injuring his leg, according to a release from the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's office.

Moments earlier, the passenger side of the eastbound truck hit the driver's side of Fields' patrol car, totaling the vehicle, officials said.

After hitting the deputy, the semi swerved into the median and went through a cable safety barrier across to the southbound lanes before ending up in the ditch, the sheriff's office said.

Fields, who radioed for help after the accident, was taken to a hospital, where his injured leg was treated; he was later released. The semi driver was not injured.

The semi driver was cited by Iowa State Patrol for failure to maintain control of his vehicle, officials said. He was also taken out of service for being fatigued.

The passengers in the car pulled over by Fields were not injured, but the driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated, the sheriff's office said.
