A man hospitalized Sunday after his motorcycle collided with an SUV in downtown Des Moines has died, officials said.

Michael Rushing, 50, of Des Moines, was involved in a crash around 7:41 p.m. as his motorcycle traveled northbound on 6th Avenue and collided with the SUV traveling eastbound on Park Street, Des Moines Police said in a news release.

A preliminary investigation shows Rushing was speeding and failed to yield to a red light before entering the intersection, Des Moines police said in a news release Monday morning. Rushing was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The SUV's driver, a 22-year-old Des Moines man, was not injured in the crash, police said.

No charges are expected at this time, officials said.

Rushing is the seventh person to die in a crash in Des Moines this year. At this same time last year, only four fatal crashes had been reported, police said. It is also the city's first fatal motorcycle crash of the year.

Des Moines police patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue members responded to the crash, which police are investigating.
