A Nevada woman died after she was rear-ended while driving slowly to protect a horse on the side of the road Saturday evening, just north of Nevada.

Nycole Henson, 27, was driving at a slower speed behind another vehicle, both with their emergency lights flashing, to protect a horse that was being walked along the side of the road at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

A third vehicle, driven by Nathaniel Oberhokam, 17, crashed into the vehicle Henson was driving at an accelerated rate, causing her to drive into a cornfield at 620th Avenue, south of 170th Street.

Sgt. Nathan Ludwig of the Iowa State Patrol said he does not know why the horse was being walked along the road.

Henson was taken to a medical examiner. Oberhokam and six others were taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center for minor injuries.

The vehicle driving in front of Henson's did not sustain any contact during the crash.
