He will seek the at-large seat held by longtime Councilman Jim Sandager, who announced his retirement on Monday.

McKinney is a partner with the BrownWinick Law firm. He chairs the firm's government relations practice group.

"West Des Moines is more than just the city in which I live," McKinney said in a news release. "It's where my grandparents raised a family and built a business and where my parents did the same. It's where as a child, I walked farm fields and spent summer days selling sweet corn in Valley Junction. It's where my wife and I chose to raise our family and where we shop, eat, and play ... I love this city."

He lists working to reduce property taxes, and attracting and retaining a strong workforce as priorities.

McKinney serves on the West Des Moines Sister Cities Commission, Greater Des Moines Partnership Board, West Des Moines Community Foundation Board, Heritage Bend Homeowners Association Board and the United Way of Central Iowa Policy Cabinet.

He graduated from the University of Iowa in 2004 and from Creighton University Law School in 2007.
