A central Iowa man accused of sexual abuse is now in custody.

Jared David Pace, 33, was booked Friday morning after missing a court appearance related to his July 2018 charge of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, court records show. An arrest warrant was ordered in September after the Grimes man missed a meeting with his pretrial release officer.

Jared D. Pace, 33, shown in his Polk County Jail mugshot.

Pace was charged after allegedly assaulting a woman in the 400 block of East Philip Street in Des Moines early in the morning of July 18, 2018. A criminal complaint filed by Des Moines police shows that Pace had met with a woman intending to have sex. The woman withdrew consent, the complaint states, telling Pace "no."

A witness told police the two were near a garage or storage unit when the victim was heard saying "no." Pace was seen, the complaint states, with his pants at his ankles, forcing the woman against the structure.

Pace showed a police officer text messages from the victim, saying that the intent to have sex was mutual, at first, and that the victim wanted to borrow money. The victim told police she did not want to have sex with Pace after he did not lend her the money.

Pace is next due in court at 2 p.m. April 18 with a jury trial scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on May 15.
