Editor's note: This story has been updated with a more specific location of where the victim's body was found.

A 23-year-old man has died after a Thursday afternoon shooting on Des Moines' north side, police said.

Officers were called to the 1600 block of Ninth Street at about 1:30 p.m. on reports of gunshots. Nearby residents said they heard around three loud “bangs.”

In the entrance to the residence, police found the victim with a gunshot wound to his torso. Police attempted CPR and the victim was taken to MercyOne Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

That man was identified Thursday evening as Rashid Mohamed Ibrahim of Des Moines.

This is Des Moines' 13th homicide of 2019, according to police.

“From a police perspective, I think one of the saddest parts is that you have a 23-year-old kid who’s shot and killed, and then you look down the street and see kids walking home from school," Des Moines Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Parizek said. "This shouldn’t be happening in their neighborhood."

Parizek said detectives are following leads and at least 10 witnesses are being interviewed in the case.

Police investigate a homicide on Des Moines' north side on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019.

Police did not know if the victim lived inside the residence, a building containing several apartments.

Ninth Street between College and Washington avenues was closed as police continued to examine evidence, according to a Des Moines Police Department news release.
