Daniel Wasta, the Iowa political director for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, proposes to Rep. Abby Finkenauer, D-Iowa.

Rep. Abby Finkenauer announced Sunday her engagement to Daniel Wasta, the Iowa political director for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

But Wasta and Finkenauer weren't the only ones excited about it: Warren announced the engagement to a crowd of about 475 at an Indianola town hall.

“I have an announcement in case you already haven’t heard it," the Massachusetts senator said as she began her speech at Simpson College on Sunday. "Abby Finkenauer is getting married! And she’s marrying Dan Wasta, who is my political director! And I’m really excited.”

Finkenauer, a Democrat who represents Iowa's 1st District, was elected in 2018. She has not endorsed a candidate in the 2020 presidential election.

Daniel Wasta previously worked as a legislative liaison in Iowa Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald's office. He is an Iowa native who has worked on several state and legislative campaigns.

The couple has been together for nearly two years, according to a Monday press release from Finkenauer's office.

It's a big year for Iowa Democratic romances: Iowa Sen. Zach Wahls and his fiancee, Australian-born journalist Chloe Angyal, were engaged in July.
