'They will make me the best person': Fast-rising Iowa QB Hunter Dekkers commits to the Cyclones

Iowa State has added a second quarterback to its 2020 recruiting class.

Hunter Dekkers, a fast-rising signal-caller out of West Sioux, announced his commitment to the Cyclones via Twitter on Sunday.

"For me, it just felt like home, and also how they preach culture and all the right things," Dekkers told the Register shortly after committing.

West Sioux, Hawarden's Hunter Dekkers (8) runs in for a touchdown to make the score 51-38 during their class 1A state championship football game on Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, in Cedar Falls. West Sioux, Hawarden would go on to beat Dike-New Hartford 52-38.

Dekkers' stock blossomed this spring and summer after he qualified for the prestigious Elite 11 finals in Texas later this month. He already held FCS offers from Northern Iowa, South Dakota and South Dakota State. Then, Indiana, Purdue and Kansas State offered in late May and early June. Michigan State, Ohio State and UCLA also showed interest.

Iowa State started picking up its interest a couple of months ago, Dekkers said, when coaches brought up the idea of adding him as the second quarterback in their 2020 class. (More often than not, colleges sign one quarterback per class; Minnesota gunslinger Aidan Bouman has been committed to Iowa State since last June.)

Then, that interest turned into an offer from the Cyclones on June 11. Dekkers, who checks in at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, took official visits to Indiana and Purdue shortly after, but Ames was the place for him.

"I think they will make me the best person I can become," he said.

247Sports gives Dekkers three stars and ranks him the No. 846 prospect in the 2020 class. He becomes Iowa State's 10th known commitment in the class.

As a junior at West Sioux, Dekkers completed 208 of 341 passes for 3,641 yards, 48 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading West Sioux to the Class 1A state title. He is Iowa State's second fast-rising in-state addition in recent weeks, joining Ankeny Centennial offensive lineman Brady Petersen as Cyclones pledges.

Dekkers didn't hold a Division I offer until South Dakota extended one in January.
