Matthew Bain
Des Moines Register

The Des Moines Register is honoring Iowa high school athletes with our male and female athletes of the week.

Vote for the student-athletes you think are most deserving of the award for the past week. Choose from our list of three boys and three girls from across the state. Readers will determine who wins each weekly award.

Here are the nominees for the week of Jan. 20-26:

Boys

Ty Walker, West Des Moines Valley, basketball

Walker starred for the Tigers in their upset of then-No. 1 Waukee 77-72 in overtime last week. He scored 25 points and added five boards and three assists. He went 6-for-10 overall, 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 9-for-10 on free throws.

Bowen Born, Norwalk, basketball

Born scored 30, 42 and 48 points in Norwalk's three wins last week, bumping his season scoring average up to 39.1 points per game. He scored those 120 points on 43-for-81 shooting, and he added 10 assists, too.

Ayden Kingery, Southeast Polk, wrestling

Kingery went 4-0 and beat two ranked wrestlers to win the Ed Winger Classic title at 126 pounds, helping the Rams win the team title as well. He beat No. 5 Thomas Edwards 5-2 in the semifinals and two-time state champ Matthew Lewis 6-3 in the finals.

Girls

Caitlin Clark, Dowling Catholic, basketball

The Maroons went 3-0 last week with wins over Ames, Waukee and Johnston. In those games, Clark scored 42, 39 and 42 points on 46-for-94 shooting with 15 assists and 29 rebounds. Clark is now averaging 35.1 points per game.

Jannell Avila, Lisbon, wrestling

Avila was the lone freshman state champion at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association girls' state wrestling tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock. She won the 138-pound title with a 2-1 win over Logan-Magnolia’s Olivia Diggins.

Abby McIntyre, Glenwood, wrestling

McIntyre won the state wrestling title at 132 pounds and had to battle through a difficult path to get there. She beat the eventual fourth-, third- and second-place finishers, and she defeated last year's champ, Waverly-Shell Rock’s Annika Behrends, in the final.
