Vote for the Register's Prep Athletes of the Week Sept. 16-22

The Des Moines Register is honoring Iowa high school athletes with our Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

Vote for the student-athletes you think are most deserving for the award for the past week. Choose from our list four boys and four girls from across the state.

Readers will determine who wins each weekly award.

Here are the nominees for the week of Sept. 16-22:

GIRLS

MACY HARRIS, Grinnell, volleyball

The senior stands 5-foot-7, but packs a punch with her hitting. In two tournaments, she went 160-for-179 hitting with 59 kills. That included a win over Tri-County of Thornburg in which she went 10-for-10 with eight kills, establishing a school record for hitting percentage in a match. Harris also had 11 ace serves and 53 digs.

TAYLOR KVALE, Dike-New Hartford, cross country

Kvale is one of the state's top freshmen this fall. She won Thursday's Norsemen Cross Country Invitational at River Bend Golf Course in Story City with a time of 21 minutes, 24 seconds, topping a field of runners from 14 schools. She won by a margin of 45 seconds. Kvale helped her school win the team title. She's currently ranked No. 12 in Class 2A by the state's coaches.

EMILY HOLTERHAUS, Pella, volleyball

Holterhaus, a senior who has committed to Northern Iowa, is one of the state's top hitters. She's averaging more than five kills per set and has an attack percentage of .406. Both statistics place her among the leaders in Class 4A. She's also a standout server, with 27 ace serves. Pella has a seven-match winning streak.

AMY FEDDERSEN, Ames, swimming

Feddersen, a senior, swam state-leading times in two events in Thursday's dual vs. Perry. She clocked a time of 50.94 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and took the backstroke in 56.27. Feddersen also ranks second in the state in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the individual medley. She's been part of two No. 1-ranked relays.

BOYS

COLTON GORDON, Lenox, football

Gordon was an offensive machine for Lenox in a 108-60 victory over Mormon Trail of Garden Grove on Friday. He scored nine touchdowns, which ties him for fifth place in state 8-player history. Gordon rushed 24 times for 319 yards and eight touchdowns. The junior added a 16-yard touchdown reception. He tallied 60 points, counting six two-point conversions. Gordon also added seven tackles on defense.

DRAKE MILLER, Fort Dodge, football

Miller threw a touchdown pass as time expired to give Fort Dodge a 22-21 win over Southeast Polk on Friday. The senior quarterback completed 24 of 47 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Both of his touchdown passes, which covered 5 and 8 yards, came in the fourth quarter. Miller has guided the Dodgers to a 4-1 record this season. He's passed for a state-leading 1,661 yards.

NICK PITTMAN, Johnston, golf

Pittman, a senior, won medalist honors at Monday's Valley Classic with a 5-under-par 66 at Willow Creek Golf Course in West Des Moines. His performance tied the school record for the lowest score for an 18-hole round. Pittman helped lead the Dragons to the team title in the 10-school meet. The Drake recruit is averaging 71.83 strokes per 18 holes this season.

CARTER MORTON, Greene County, football

Morton, a junior receiver, has helped lead Greene County to a 5-0 start this season. His team beat Shenandoah, 62-0, Friday. The five wins is already the most for the team since 2013. Morton has caught 20 passes for 475 yards and six touchdowns this fall. Morton has caught at least one touchdown pass in all of his team's games.
