Wollen Michelmore is now one of the largest independent law firms in the West Country, after a hectic but hugely successful year that saw two mergers.

The first was with Morgan and Pope, which saw Wollen Michelmore open its first Exeter office in Cathedral Yard, followed by a consolidation of the Barnstaple and North Devon business with the merger of Toller Beattie.

The firm now employs 185 people – with offices in Torquay, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Barnstaple and Dartmouth – and a turnover of almost £10m.

Chris Hart, Chief Executive, said: "We have been serving the legal community in Devon for the past 150 years, and we have a love for Devon and a passion for the work we do.

"We believe in being at the heart of the community and helping and supporting that community by sponsoring events such as the Exeter Business Awards. We also sponsor many local clubs, events and sports teams – including for the second year running, Western Storm, Somerset County Cricket Club's women's team.

"We are no strangers to awards ourselves. We have been shortlisted as a finalist in the Team of the Year category at this year's Devon and Somerset Law Society Legal Awards.

"We won the Excellence in Private Client category in the Law Society's prestigious national Excellence Awards in 2017, and last year Wollen Michelmore was shortlisted for Law Firm of the Year by the Law Society, and won Law Firm of the Year at the Devon and Somerset Law Society Legal Awards.

"Key to that success is teamwork. Wollen Michelmore has a great team which recognises that it's all about working with the community and the business community."
