The A380 dual carriageway is closed in both directions between Exeter and Newton Abbot after a serious crash involving an overturned caravan.

One person is reported to have suffered head injuries in the crash. Both the caravan and the Jeep that was towing it have flipped over near Ideford Dip, witnesses report.

The caravan has crashed over the central reservation and the jeep is on the opposite side of the carriageway.

Four fire engines, ambulance crews and police are at the scene

A police spokesman said: "It's been reported as a vehicle and a caravan has overturned on the A380.

"The vehicle has gone on to the other side of the carriageway.

"It happened between Exeter and Newton Abbot. No one is reported to be trapped but we have got someone with a head injury.

"It's the Newton Abbot side of the Ideford Dip. Both carriageways are currently blocked and an ambulance is on the scene.

"It's blocked in both directions and traffic in the area is building."

The traffic information service Inrix says: "A380 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to overturned car and caravan from B3192 ( Ashcombe  /  Teignmouth  turn off,  Ashcombe ) to B3195  Ideford  Combe ( Ideford ).
"A car towing a caravan has crossed the central reservation and overturned."

Teignmouth Gridlocked

The A380 crash is impacting on towns and villages along the South Devon coast as traffic struggles to bypass the road closure.

Roads through Bishopsteignton and Teignmouth are gridlocked and drivers are using narrow back lanes around Combeinteignhead and Shaldon.

On the northbound side of the A380 one lane is open and travel time is around 20 to 25 minutes.

The A382 at Stover to Newton Abbot from Drum Bridges also has heavy traffic.

Update from police

A man who was the driver of the Toyota vehicle involved has suffered minor injuries, say police.

One lane on each side of the carriageway has reopened to allow traffic through.

Witness says jeep and caravan have ended up on opposite carriageways

A witness is reporting that one lane northbound is now open.

He said: “A caravan has flipped. I didn’t see it happen but it looks as if the jeep that was pulling it has flipped over as well.

There are four fire engines here and two ambulances and the police.

“The caravan is on the Torquay side and the jeep is on the Exeter side.”
