Do you remember life in 1989?

Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, Sky television started broadcasting through satellites for the first time and the Berlin wall was finally torn down.

It was also a time when - as this classic video shows - Devon's High Streets were booming.

This footage was taken by ex-Barnstaple photographer Paul Harris, who moved to Hollywood to pursue a glittering career snapping celebrities.

As well as some choice fashion (check out those shell suits) the video shows shoppers bustling through the High Street doing Christmas shopping.

It also shows some of the stores and boutiques which have long since closed.

Here are just some of the old shops we spotted in this footage:

  • Kenwood Cetre
  • Etam
  • Stead and Simpsons Shoes
  • Sound and Vision
  • The Dressmakers Shop
  • Harpers and Bromleys
  • La Maison
  • Arbys
  • Funzone
  • Currys
  • Ratners
  • Brian Yeo Butchers
  • Yendell's

Paul, a former pupil of Barnstaple Boys School, said he posted the video "for everyone to enjoy".

He said: "My wife Petronela, also from Barnstaple, appears a couple times - she’s the lady in the reddish coat looking back at the camera.

"Her dad owned the Diamond Fruit market which was behind Mugfords on the square, now the Tavern."

Although he now lives in America, Paul says he has very fond memories of North Devon.

Of course back in 1989 there was no internet shopping and the likes of Amazon and eBay weren't even a concept.

This past year has seen several giants of the High Street close after struggling to stay afloat in the competitive market place.
