A motorcyclist has been left with life-threatening injuries after a crash in Exeter.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision on the A379 Bridge Road, at Countess Wear on the outskirts of Exeter, at around 11am today.

Devon and Cornwall Police officers took to social media to state that the road would remain "closed for a time" and drivers were urged to find alternate routes.

The force has now confirmed that the biker was transferred to hospital, where he remains.

A statement said: "At approximately 10.40am on Saturday, May 16, a two vehicle collision occurred between a car and a motorcycle on Rydon Lane, at the junction with Old Rydon Lane, in Exeter, Devon.

"As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist, who is local to the area, sustained serious, life threatening injuries.

"The car driver did not sustain any injuries.

"The injured motorcyclist was taken to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

"Local officers, as well as officers from the Alliance Roads Policing Team and Serious Collision Investigation Team, attended the scene.

"Once a forensic investigation had been conducted, the road was re-opened.

"Any persons who witnessed the collision or has information regarding it – in particular a large grey panel van who may have witnessed the collision, are asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101, quoting log number 247 of the 16th May 2020."

Traffic-reporting service Inrix earlier reported: "A379 closed due to serious accident, two vehicles involved at Old Rydon Lane. Traffic is coping well.

"The road is closed at the junction not far from Exeter Golf Club."
