A man's body has been found in the River Otter after being spotted by a member of the public.

The deceased was found around 50 metres from a bridge near Back Lane, Newton Poppleford, shortly before 5pm.

Police, paramedics and the fire service have been searching the river since around 3.20pm.

The original call to 999, from a local woman, described a body seen floating down the river near Harpford - and a full-scale search was launched.

Inquiries are now ongoing and efforts will begin to locate the man's next of kin.

A National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter was involved in the search.
