At the end of year 6, pupils take national curriculum assessments more commonly known as SATs, which cover reading, maths, grammar, punctuation and spelling. They must also complete a teacher assessment in reading, writing, maths and science.

To reach the expected standard, pupils must achieve a scaled score of 100 or more in their reading and maths tests, as well as being judged to be either 'reaching the expected standard' or 'working at greater depth' in the writing teacher assessment.

Clawton Primary School was rated as outstanding in 2014, and at that time had 106 pupils. Currently the rural school is in management partnership with Woolacombe Support and Teaching School and since September had been led by interim headteacher Sandy Brown, a national leader of education.

She said: "I can't comment about the past as I didn't take over until September, but I have been put into the school to make sure it moves forward, is totally different and has a great future. It's a lovely school and the pupils deserve the best."
