A woman who was hit by a car in Exeter last night remains in hospital in a critical condition, police have said.

Officers were called to Alphington Road at 9.20pm yesterday after reports of a crash involving a car and a pedestrian.

A woman was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the collision which happened underneath the railway bridge.

Police say the woman was initially taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, but subsequently had to be transferred to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Speaking today, a police spokesman said that is where she remains "in a critical condition".

The spokesman said: "The owner of the vehicle involved in the collision is assisting police with their enquiries to establish the cause of this collision.

"Witnesses are requested to contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101, quoting log number 847 of 15th December 2018."

The road was closed in both directions as a result and remains closed in the northbound direction this morning.

Devon and Cornwall Police were at the scene and explained that a car crashed into a fence.

It is believed that in doing so the car hit a female pedestrian.
