Two people, including a 14-year-old girl, were arrested behind Exeter's Riverside last night after two men suffered knife wounds nearby.

The drama unfolded when police were called to Commercial Road, near the Bishops Blaize pub on following reports two men had been assaulted.

A 26-year-old man received a knife wound to the head and was taken to hospital, along with an 18-year-old.

Both men, from Exeter, were treated by ambulance but injuries were not described as serious. The 18-year-old man was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

Police said the assailants ran from the scene.

A representative of the police added: "While officers were on scene a car was seen to be driven through a red light, crossing from Commercial Road to Alphington Road. The vehicle stopped at the back of Riverside Leisure Centre and the occupants fled.

"A 19-year-old man from Buckinghamshire and a 14-year-old girl from Torquay were arrested near to the vehicle. A knife was seized by officers.

"They were both arrested on suspicion of assault GBH with intent.

"The man was further arrested for dangerous driving and taking a motor vehicle without consent. He was also taken to Royal

"Devon and Exeter Hospital prior to custody to be treated for a cut to his hand.

"The girl was further arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and possession of Class A drugs."

Several police cars were at the scene in Exeter

Eyewitness @Jonbydesign saw the incident unfolding at Riverside, and said he saw at least six police cars.

He said: "Lots of police cars traveling at speed passed the entrance to the gym as I was leaving.

"Saw a group of other gym users at the end of the pavement before the car park to Riverside.

"As I approached them they asked if I was parked in the car park and that I wouldn't be able to go down there.

"Sure enough there was a lot of police cars."

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called just after 8pm yesterday [21 February] following reports that two men after been assaulted near Bishops Blaze Pub in Commercial Road, Exeter. 

"An 18-year-old man received a knife wound to his arm and the other, aged 26, received a knife wound to his head.

"Both men, from Exeter, were treated by ambulance but injuries were not described as serious. The 18-year-old man was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. 

"The assailants ran from the scene.

A representative of South West Ambulance Trust said: "We were called on Thursday at 8.13pm about an incident at a private address in St Thomas area. We sent various resources to the scene including two ambulances."

Two people remain in custody.
