There's a fancy dress shop in Exeter which has been in the same family for 20 years - but many people still say they had no idea it's there.

Fantasy World, which has become an emporium of costumes and dressing up, has been in the same place on Fore Street for decades.

Jason Mortimore, who has a passion for mask making, took on the shop around 20 years ago.

His brother, Russell, and mum, Elizabeth help out.

The huge shop is stacked with everything from face paints to huge Pikachu costumes, and they also have a genuine Stormtrooper outfit.

Whilst there are plenty of buyable costumes, from a giant whoopie cushion to cowboys and everything inbetween, there are also rows of intricate fancy dress items which can be hired.

But it doesn't stop there - every accessory imaginable fills the shop too - from crazy eyelashes to hanging bats.

Having been in the spot for such a long time, a few famous faces have visited - including the likes of Judi Spiers, Joss Stone and Exeter's Labour MP Ben Bradshaw.

Russell, 44, joined the business full time around three years ago.

He said: "My brother Jason came to make horror masks and then started working here full time.

"The fancy dress collection has grown over the years - a new addition is the lobster in the front of the shop.

"A lot of people come in for pirate [costumes] and there's a whole section of 1920s [outfits], they're our popular areas.

"If we haven't got it we can always get it - we just need to know in advance."

All year the shop has a Halloween section, which is by far their most in demand aspect of fancy dress.

And Jason, 48, even makes scary latex masks which people can buy.

The popular ones include a Michael Myers mask and Freddie. Jason's ET mask also sits pride of place on the counter, and he's also created scary Slipknot replicas.

In the wake of online shopping, Russell was asked how the business has survived. He said: "We just have managed], we plod along. We look at how much it is online and try to undercut.

"Our busiest time is Halloween, Christmas, New year and World Book Day."

Fantasy World is open Mondays to Saturdays and can be found at 118 Fore Street, Exeter.

Hire costume prices start from £25 for four days. The Stormtrooper is £80 to hire and all items require a deposit.
