Resurfacing works on one of Exeter's busiest routes is set to create issues during this afternoon's rush hour.

Drivers will be forced to wait in queues at Exe Bridges or be diverted entirely, with a series of closures and partial closures in place.

The delays are impacting nearby routes, including Bonhay Road and Alphington Road - which were jam-packed with cars this morning.

What closures are in place at Exe Bridges?

There was confusion as to how much of Exe Bridges will close this weekend, but Devon County Counci issued definitive information on the matter yesterday.

From 7am today (Saturday March 23) until 6am on Monday, there will be no access at all to Bonhay Road from Exe Bridges.

Three lanes of the North Bridge connecting Bonhay Road and Frog Street will be closed.

And in addition, access to Exe Bridges and some adjoining roads will be restricted.

Neither of the bridges will be entirely closed and signed diversions will be in place, but delays should be expected.

This work is being carried over from last weekend, which was cancelled due to high winds.

The work is part of a Devon County Council scheme, which involves reconstructing and resurfacing Exe Bridges and an adjoining section of Alphington Street.

The north and south bridge will also be re-waterproofed beneath the carriageway to maintain the structure, and a number of manhole covers, gully gratings and kerbs will be replaced.

The work started on March 4, 2019 and it is expected to take eight weeks to complete.

The roads affected will change over these weekends and further information and traffic management plans are available at   https://new.devon.gov.uk/roadsandtransport/traffic-information/roadworks/exe-bridges-resurfacing/
