An enforcement officer says more travellers are about to arrive in Devon, after a week of "mayhem."

It comes as a group of Irish travellers causing havoc on Marsh Barton trading estate in Exeter flee the city following a row which cost two businesses an entire day of trading.

A specialist cleaning group have had to be drawn in to clean up human faeces and a mountain of rubbish left behind at Matford Business Park after a row with a van workshop business.

And a group causing issues at a dry ski slope in Torquay, shutting the business until further notice, have now moved onto a council owned car park in Paignton, known as Key West car park, after being threatened with police action.

Nigel Wills, of Devon Investigation Ltd, has been working with private businesses and council in moving on travellers from private land for more than 30 years.

Even he has been baffled by the influx this week.

He explained: "The group at Marsh Barton left at around 5.30pm and left a lot of faeces after defecating on the back of a business they had a row with. A cleaning team has been sent in. They left all their rubbish, general rubbish, behind.

"They moved to Cranmere Court nearby, walking distance really. I got all the notices ready to serve them but they had already gone by the time I got there today as they had had enough and left the area."

On the group in Torquay, he added: "They were due to move from Torquay Alpine Ski Club  at 9am this morning and they didn't want to move until next week and wanted petrol money to move. They were demanding it. But when police action was threatened they drove off and have no settled on council land in Paignton."

But not all the travellers have been aggressive.

Mr Wills says a group he dealt with in Taunton moved on quietly and took their rubbish with them.

He also says a group in Exmouth, on the car park next to the train station, have been causing little issue and he will be visiting them tomorrow night to see whether they intend to move. If not he will serve a legal notice on Monday morning.

On their arrival, he added: "It still appears to be random and I can't fathom it. They tell me they are just down early this year and others are on the way."

Devon Live spoke with a traveller in Exmouth yesterday, who said: "We're just down here for a few days on holiday.

"We are not connected to the other travellers that have been around."

For Mr Wills it's a headache, in til 1am with a mountain of paperwork created by their arrival.

The arrival of travellers to Matford Business Park in Exeter appeared to have been motivated by a dispute with a business.

Tim Butler, a manager at Van Guard Full Fit, told Devon Live on Thursday, March 21: "Basically, they dropped a vehicle in to panel out on Monday. Previous years I have refused but I have had them spit in my face. So I said I'd do the one.

"When they came back they wanted more and more and they hadn't paid for any of it. I told them to take the keys and go."

Tim claims: "They told me they'd throw a brick through the window and park a caravan in front of the entrance."

The altercation was been reported to police, who were powerless to do anything about the situation due to a lack of CCTV evidence.

BSS, an industrial piping and heating company opposite, were unable to trade entirely because the travellers blocked their lorries from leaving.

The cost of the occupation on businesses in Marsh Barton and Torquay is not yet known.
