Quick Facts: Exeter's Medieval Exe Bridge

  • One of the earliest of its kind in England, completed in around 1238
  • Only nine arches remain, but the bridge spanned a greater distance
  • Experts believe it replaced a wooden Roman bridge across the river

The fights broke out just hours after a separate incident involving street drinkers in Exeter city centre.

One man was arrested and one person involved was taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police told Devon Live: "One male is in custody as a result of the incident.

"Someone was taken to hospital in an ambulance but at this stage it is not clear who.

"We are still dealing with those involved."

Witnesses reported seeing people on the ground "shouting" and one woman taken into the back of an ambulance.

A man was seen being wheeled into the back of an ambulance and a woman was also taken into the care of paramedics - though it is not clear whether she had been knocked unconscious or fallen from her bike accidentally.
