Police have said they are prosecuting motorists who were making up part of the M5 Brexit blockade earlier this evening.

Inspector Si Jenkinson tweeted that two drivers ignored police advice to not deliberately obstruct the carriageway and were prosecuted.

He wrote: "M5 go slow. Our advice was the same, make your protest, don’t deliberately obstruct the carriageway. It seems two drivers ignored this advice, slowing to speeds as low as 20mph on the motorway. They’ve been stopped and prosecuted."

Around a dozen vehicles left the services at Sandygate roundabout on the outskirts of Exeter at approximate 5.40pm earlier today with an escort of two Highways England vehicles and a police car.

It was to protest at the lack of progress being made at the UK leaving the EU.

A similar event occurred earlier today on the A30 in Cornwall, causing roughly five miles of tailbacks.

However, it is believed the Exeter go-slow had a far more limited impact.

Police said a total of nine vehicles had been stopped, with words of advice given to those not prosecuted.
