There could be traffic chaos in Exeter this weekend because of planned protests and roadworks.

A protest group has urged lorry drivers to create a rolling ‘blockade’ on junction 30 of the M5 at Exeter on Friday, and with one of the city’s busiest routes set to close for the weekend, it could cause large disruption.

And in the city centre, hundreds are expected to march through the streets in an anti-hunt protest.

Here is what could be expected to cause travel chaos this weekend.

Blockade by lorry drivers

Brexit Direct Action are a group that have called on lorry drivers across the country to create havoc on major roads, including the M5.

Whether a slow rolling road block at 30mph, or a completely blockage of routes, it is unclear as to how it would be implemented.

In Devon, there is suggestion Junction 30 in Exeter will be a starting point on the M5 for the action. The go-slow convoy would then snake up the motorway.

Action would begin during the Friday evening rush hour, lasting until the early hours of Saturday.

Exe Bridges roadworks

One of Exeter’s busiest routes is set to close this weekend because of planned resurfacing works.

Exe Bridges will shut from Saturday until Monday as part of an eight-week programme to improve the road surface.

Exe Bridges

Devon County Council initially said that the whole of Exe Bridges would close this weekend, but said on Thursday that it will be restricted down to one lane with no access to Bonhay Road from Exe Bridges.

However, the works are being reviewed on Friday so the closures could change.

Similar works were planned to take place last weekend but had to be postponed because of the poor weather.

The scheme involves excavating approximately 1,500 tonnes of material and then re-laying a similar quantity. This is equivalent to the weight of approximately 1,000 cars.

Anti-hunt protest

Organisers are hoping that hundreds will turn out in Exeter city centre on Saturday in a march against fox hunting.

It is the first march organised by Devon Against Hunting - a new group which hopes to unite anti-fox hunting groups and change the attitude of the police towards it.

The March starts at noon on Saturday at Belmont Park. It will then proceed down into the High Street.
