A coastguard helicopter has been sent to a luxury cruise ship near Torbay.

It is happening on the huge Amadea ship, which is currently off the coast of Paignton.

The Bristow helicopter left its base in Newquay just after noon, and is currently circling the  $150m cruise ship.

The giant cruise ship Amadea arrived in Tor Bay yesterday at the start of her season in Europe. She arrived in the bay from Cork, having crossed the Atlantic from Newfoundland at the end of a spring which has taken in New Zealand, Mexico and the United States.

She was built in Japan and entered service as the flagship of the German Phoenix Reisen line in 2006. She has two royal suites, 40 suites and 254 cabins, 106 of which have private balconies. She cost $150m to build.

The Amadea is due in Bremerhaven tomorrow to begin a busy summer schedule around Europe. At the weekend Artania, another cruise ship, called in the bay.
