Two drunken train passengers have been arrested for allegedly causing trouble on a journey then spitting and headbutting officers.

British Transport Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident which happened on Monday evening at Exeter Central Station.

Two men were taken into custody where one of them is said to have assaulted officers.


BTP said in a statement: “At 10.44pm yesterday evening (25/03) officers were called to Exeter Central station after reports of a disturbance on board a train. Officers attended and a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence. He was later further arrested on suspicion of railway trespass.

“A 27-year-old man from Exmouth was also arrested on suspicion of a public order offence, railway trespass and assaulting a police officer. Both men are in custody as enquiries continue. The assault happened at police custody.

“Any witnesses are asked to contact BTP by sending a text to 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 703 of 25/03/2019.”

A tweet sent by British Transport Police Devon & Cornwall said: "Busy morning - two PICs to deal with for public order/trespass/2 assaults of police officers (spitting and headbutting officers) at Exeter Central!

"Luckily no injuries to officers."

Meanwhile DS Dan Brenchley wrote: "Assisted BTP with two drunk males at Central station. One male threatened to spit at officers whilst being arrested. Spit hood used to great effective to protect all the officers."
